Eat, drink & be merry! 6 alternative Christmas Dinners

It’s the most wonderful time of the year – but if the thought of a festive roast with too much turkey and mushy Brussel sprouts isn’t exactly jingling your bells then listen closely my friend. I’m making a list – and I’m checking it twice – of all the best alternative Christmas dinners in the city. So, dig out your loudest Christmas jumpers and practice your best Christmas cracker jokes, for this festive feast is going to be a great one.

Bodega

I imagine Christmas in South America is very different than here in Birmingham. And as the weather outside is getting colder, Christmas dinner is hotting up, with a festive fiesta courtesy of Bodega. On the menu is slow cooked Mexican beef, spiced pear empanadas and battered avocado served with ‘fire and ice’ – no Christmas pudding or cranberry sauce in sight! If you’re looking for some entertainment other than your festive disco then grab your mates for a cocktail masterclass. Step behind the bar yourself and shake up a Christmas carnival in a glass. Feliz Navidad!

The Stable

No room at the inn? In the style of Mary and Joseph, head to The Stable this Christmas. The stable claim to cater for all – even those with a seasonal turkey addiction. So if you’ve been waiting all year for your turkey hit then they’ve got you covered. The Turkey Gobbler provides all the best flavours of Christmas on a gloriously doughy and cheesy pizza. Think roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, caramelised onions with sage. Mmmm, we’re drooling just writing this. And if pizza for Christmas is a bit ‘out there’ for you don’t worry, you can go pretty classic on your other courses. Christmas pudding for afters, and a cheese board to kick things off. You’ll probably have to undo the button on your trousers once you’ve devoured all this, but it’s SO worth it.

Island Bar

So, you’ve been put in charge of organising the office Christmas party. Yes, it’s a lot of unwanted stress and effort, but here’s the bonus. You get to choose where you go. Forget the stuffy function rooms and bad discos of years past. This time take your co-workers to the tropics, by booking in at Island Bar! Their laid back festive buffet menu includes nachos, mini festive burgers, pigs in blankets, mince pie empanadas and much more. Don’t forget their famous menu of tropical cocktails too! After all, ‘tis the season to be tiki!

Turtle Bay

Swap the stuffing and pigs in blankets for some rice and peas – Turtle Bay are serving up a Jamaican feast with all the flavours of the Caribbean. On the menu they’re serving up Mango Pit Wings, half a chicken smothered in jerk sauce, all followed up with some fruity offerings for dessert. Christmas in the bay will have you wanting to swap your Santa hat for your sunglasses!

Zindiya

If you fancy straying away from the traditional Christmas roast but your tummy is still telling you Turkey, head to Zindiya this Christmas time. They’re serving up an Indian infused turkey kebab, with all the trimmings you’d expect from a Zindiya Christmas – bhajis, masala chips and cranberry sauce (obviously!). If you’re wanting to swap the turkey, why not try the salmon tikka? And for dessert, not a Christmas Pudding in sight! Instead, try Zindiya’s signature chocolate gol gappe – chocolate balls filled with berries served with a chocolate milkshake and a shot of chilli, a sure kick to spice up your Christmas dinner!

Buffalo & Rye

If you’re looking for a little southern hospitality, mosey on down to Buffalo & Rye this Christmas. Serving up the type of food they’re famous for, you can get St. Louis ribs and a brisket burger on the menu. But if you’re still wanting the turkey don’t you worry. Their apple cider and ginger brined turkey is accompanied by brown buttered potato and butternut squash mash, to give your Christmas dinner that speakeasy style.
